NISHIYAMA — Kappabashi, Tokyo
English support and tax-free are shown only where we've confirmed them. Many Kappabashi shops do offer tax-free — ask at the register (passport required).
Nishiyama has sold lacquerware since 1916, and calls itself the longest-established lacquerware specialist in Kappabashi. Bowls, chopsticks, sake cups, plates, jubako stacking boxes, trays and tea utensils: more than a thousand pieces are out on the shelves at any one time.
The shop buys directly from the craftspeople and sells at wholesale prices, and it takes repairs, so a piece can stay in use for years. The official site has pages in English. Monday to Saturday 9:30–17:30; on Sundays and public holidays the shop opens on some days and not others.
